Velocity Frequent Flyer Becomes First Australian Airline Program to Convert ShopBack Cashback to Points at 50 per Dollar

Virgin Australia's Velocity program has partnered with ShopBack, converting each $1 of cashback into 50 Velocity Points with no fee. Australia is ShopBack's second market for frequent flyer conversion after Hong Kong.

Velocity Frequent Flyer is the first Australian airline loyalty program to partner with ShopBack, Travel Weekly Australia reported on October 20. Members link their Velocity account in the ShopBack app or website and can convert cashback into points.

Each $1 of ShopBack cashback converts to 50 Velocity Points with no conversion fee. Redemptions start at $5 and are capped at $600 a day. Members who link accounts between 20 and 22 November receive 100 bonus points, and there is a separate draw for 100,000 points.

Velocity's chief commercial officer Shanika Ekanayake said the airline wants to make it easier for members to earn points through spending they already do. Points can be used on Virgin Australia and partner flights including Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and United.

Why it matters for loyalty teams

This is a cash-to-points conversion, and the interesting part is which side bears the cost. ShopBack's cashback is already funded by merchants; Velocity gains points-liability growth and a flow of new member links without running its own retail partnerships. That makes it a cheap acquisition channel for the airline and a stickiness feature for ShopBack.

For a mid-market loyalty operator, the lesson is the direction of the trade. Letting members pour an external currency into your points balance raises the cost of leaving, since a balance built from cashback is harder to walk away from. The smaller form is a partnership with a cashback or aggregator app that pays you a bulk-purchase rate for points, which you can price at a margin above your breakage-adjusted cost per point.

The risk is dilution. If conversion is generous relative to how you value a point, members may treat you as a cashback sink and redeem immediately. The daily cap here is a sign Velocity is managing that. It does not apply to businesses without a redeemable currency worth converting into, and the source gives no figure on Velocity's cost per point.
